NEW YORK -- After a 15-year pro career that included 45 fights and three world championships, Worcester super welterweight Jose Antonio Rivera wanted to go out on top.
Wishful thinking.
Daniel Santos (31-3-1, 22 KOs) of Puerto Rico sent a tired-looking Rivera (38-6-1, 24 KOs) into retirement with an eighth-round TKO in a WBA title elimination bout last night before 7,102 boxing fans at Madison Square Garden.
The lopsided victory -- only one of the three judges gave Rivera a single round -- earned Santos the WBA's No. 1 ranking and made him the mandatory challenger for recently crowned champion Joachim Alcine.
