Patricia Hill Collins, distinguished university professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, made history at the American Sociological Association's (ASA) recent annual meeting in New York City, becoming the first Black woman elected president of the organization.

Founded in 1905, the association is the national organization for sociologists and represents some 14,000 members throughout the world.
