After several years of advocacy, abortion was finally legalised in Nepal in 2002. Services in some public hospitals have begun, with a March 2007 report from the Ministry of Health revealing that more than 100,000 safe abortion services have been provided to women in these facilities.
Though this data is encouraging, a recent unpublished study conducted by Dr. Aruna Upreti in many rural areas of Nepal reveals that much remains to be done to ensure that people in the rural areas become aware that abortion is now legal. 450 women and 50 men (community-based health volunteers, members of community-based organisations, non-government organisation workers, and school teachers ...
