A navigation unit and its maps are a necessary combination for personal navigation devices, but the announcement in July that PND-maker TomTom seeks to buy mapmaker Tele Atlas for $2.5 billion ([euro]2 billion) has analysts and competing PND makers concerned.

If the deal is successful, Tele Atlas, based in Den Bosch, Netherlands, will operate as an independent business unit and will continue to supply other manufacturers, including TomTom's competitors, with digital maps and other data.
