Last month its complaint against newspaper adverts put out by rival General Motors - which claimed that Corsa Lite's servicing parts were cheaper than those of its rivals - came before the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) Directorate.

The advert was based on the results of Car Magazine's parts basket survey, which found that the Corsa Lite maintenance parts were cheaper than those of the CitiGolf.

But VW argued that, according to its own research, the Corsa's parts were not cheaper and that pending the outcome of its dispute with the magazine, the adverts should be put on hold.
