Tribe beefs up casino operations in New England.

Oct. 7--The tribe that runs the Western world's largest gambling venue is making a run at a commercial casino license in Massachusetts at the same time it beefs up the resort it runs just over the Rhode Island border in Mashantucket, Conn.

The Mashantucket Pequots are trying to protect Foxwoods Resort Casino, New England's oldest casino, from competition encroaching into the region as they look beyond their home state for places to capitalize on Americans' appetite for gambling.

Rhode Island figures into those efforts only as a repository of workers and gamblers, according to Foxwoods executives, where about 15 percent of the casino's 10,000 ...
