Oct. 8--After nearly a half century of service to Salt Lake City, public utilities director LeRoy Hooton Jr. is retiring.

Mayor Rocky Anderson has named Jeff Niermeyer as new director, subject to approval of the City Council.

Hooton, best known for overseeing the capital's comprehensive watershed-protection plan, spent the last 28 years as public utilities director. Under Hooton, the city reduced its water consumption nearly 15 percent between 2000 and 2006.

"LeRoy's service and dedication to Salt Lake City has been tremendous, historic and invaluable to all city residents," Anderson said in a news release Monday.
