Nintendo will spend the rest of the year attempting to breathe new life into the 16-bit videogame business now that it has decided to delay the release of its Ultra 64 player until next April.

For this year, the battle of the next-generation machines will be fought by Sega's Saturn and Sony's PlayStation, both CD-based machines.

Although many industry observers were disappointed by Nintendo's announcement, few said they were surprised. The cartridge-based Ultra 64, which was originally scheduled for a fall release, will be absent from shelves this Christmas, but few believe Nintendo has eliminated itself from the race.
