A new compact radiation therapy system that relies on proton beams can target cancer more precisely than conventional methods, according to the technology's developers. Researchers said the compact machine is far less expensive than full-scale equipment.
Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that replaces the high energy x-rays of conventional radiation therapy with proton beams. While x-rays deliver energy to all the tissues they travel through, proton beams deposit almost all their energy in their target, with a low amount of radiation deposited in tissues from the surface of the skin to the front of tumor and almost no exit dose beyond the tumor.
