Younger women have a higher lifetime risk of cancer associated with radiation exposure from computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA), according to a study in the July 18 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The development of 64-slice CT scanners has been an important step in the noninvasive diagnosis of coronary artery disease. CTCA produces cross-sectional views of the heart and coronary arteries. Some health care experts have predicted that CTCA may emerge as the diagnostic test of choice for patients with intermediate probability of disease. However, few data exist on cancer risk associated with exposure to radiation from CTCA.
