A radiation therapy planning tool helps reduce the amount of time needed to plan advanced treatments such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), according to the manufacturer.
The new Smart Segmentation feature from Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, California, is the world's first fully automatic tool that uses software to identify and outline organs and other structures on diagnostic images of the thorax and male pelvis. Until now structures to be irradiated or protected during radiation therapy treatments were identified manually, according to Varian.
