Over the past three decades, painter and sculptor Nicolas Carone has been carving heads from rocks he finds around his studio in Umbria. For his second show at Lohin Geduld, the gallery brought a large group of these sculptures to the U.S. for the first time. He also exhibited several small wax figures (mostly headless) and numerous drawings (in the back room).
The 25 stone heads, which variously evoke the antique and the modern, do not have titles or dates and range in size from about 7 to 14 inches at their largest dimension. Several of them suggest youthful males with smooth and balanced faces, Caesar-style hairlines and exquisite curvature of cheek and jaw. ...
