Oct. 9--LOWELL -- If Elvis and Lucille Ball can have a stamp, why not Jack Kerouac?

So goes the thinking of Dean Contover, who for the last 14 years has led a dogged pursuit to get the Beat writer's mug on a U.S. postage stamp.

After a protracted quest, which began when stamps were 29 cents, the Chelmsford man is revamping his efforts.

But he can't do it alone.

"I need public support," Contover said. "All I can do is plug away and ask people to support me. It's too bad it's taken this long, but that's my goal. By hook or by crook, I'll get it done."
