Oct. 9--PEPPERELL -- There's an adage that water and oil don't mix, but Timothy Lorden Sr., who was fond of such insightful cliches, knew that wasn't true.

The Lorden family started cutting ice from the Townsend Harbor and Heald Pond in Pepperell for delivery to area homes when Lorden was a boy.

Josephine Lorden rode the ice wagon with her husband, Charles Lorden, and saved enough money to pay for a new truck her husband bought for delivering kerosene around 1935.
