Oct. 9--LOWELL -- One officer dove into a pool, another ran into a burning building, and three others performed CPR on a drowning 10-year-old.
Those five officers, involved in two different incidents this year, will get at least one paid day off after Police Superintendent Kenneth Lavallee gave them commendations this month.
Officer Vincent Fernandez responded to a fire at 450 Central St., on May 16, at about 12:45 a.m. He saw flames engulfing the building's second and third floors, and though a language barrier kept him from learning a lot, bystanders were able to communicate that people were inside.
