UC San Diego Announces Plans For Proton/Particle Center: UC San Diego said Sept. 12 that it is planning to build a center for proton and particle therapy and research.
The center will have an emphasis on pediatrics and will be located on campus, says Dr. Arno Mundt, chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology. Proton therapy is used to treat cancer patients and, unlike X-ray treatment, it can reduce the risk of toxicity. Also, the radiation dose can be raised significantly with minimal harm to healthy tissue surrounding tumors, according to Mundt.
