Oct. 10--A routine agenda item concerning a field trip prompted the Tamaqua Area School Board on Tuesday to consider whether the district should require background checks of Parent-Teacher Organization volunteers.
The agenda item, a proposed PTO-sponsored trip to Philadelphia and the Camden Aquarium by West Penn Elementary School fifth-graders, came up at a meeting of the board's committees.
That led the board to wonder about chaperones.
Board President Larry Wittig suggested the checks on certain volunteers who chaperone trips.
"Maybe if it is not a parent or guardian we should run a background check," he said.
