Oct. 10--The basketball referees in Japan cannot understand a word Chris Ayer says. If he objects to a call, he might say, "Oh, come on, man!" or something with extra sauce and a few more syllables.
Whistle. Technical foul.
"They're quick to throw a 'T' at an American," he says with a laugh.
The former Flowing Wells High School center could be saying, "I love your country! I love the sushi! Surfing on the Seto Inland Sea is awesome, man!"
And, still: "I got 'T'd up a couple of times," he says. "The language barrier has been difficult. It was a real shot in the dark for me to come here."
