BRIEF: Fall into the Schuylkill is fatal to Phila. girl, 3.

Oct. 10--A 3-year-old girl tossing rocks from an abandoned pier in Southwest Philadelphia last night slipped into the Schuylkill and drowned, police said.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. behind Bartram Village, near 56th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, where the toddler was playing with a 12-year-old aunt, said police Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives.

The girls were throwing rocks into the river when the younger child lost her footing and fell into the water, Walker said.

The older girl tried to rescue the toddler by jumping through a hole in the pier where the water below was about 4 feet deep, Walker said.
