Oct. 10--Sitting in a Campbell juice bar reading the local weekly paper, John Mitchem got the fright of his life. Students at Westmont High would be hosting a haunted house and portraying mental institution patients as "tortured souls" living "restless half-lives."

The ghoulish patients, the ad continued, would be "drowning in the abyss of their psychiatric deformities." And for a $10 general admission fee, the public could watch them be "haunted by the machinations of their own degenerating minds."

Not exactly what you want to read about when you're president of the local branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
