Oct. 10--Liliana Fernandez came to Esperanza Community Services to help her son, Giovanni, who was born with a weak tongue.
In this squat, cinderblock building just west of the Loop, her son, who is almost 3, has learned to say "ball" and "juice" and "shoe" and how to sign the word "more" with his small fingers. He can even put his lips together now, a vital skill for blowing bubbles.
He learns far more here than at home, how to share as well as to speak.
It's precisely because Esperanza has helped Fernandez and her son so much that she plans to show up Wednesday with other mothers and some protest signs.
