Teen Feared Jail, Her Grandmother Says.

Oct. 10--NEW BRITAIN -- Bianca Madley, the 16-year-old who was killed when she crashed a stolen car after a police chase Sunday, had been arrested for shoplifting less than two weeks ago and was probably afraid of going to jail, her grandmother said Tuesday.

Norma Gervais said Bianca was a troubled but kind teenager who was struggling to live on her own after her mother, Lynn C. Madley, died in a car accident 10 years ago.

"It affected her. She wanted to live her life, but she was doing all the wrong things," Gervais said.
