Oct. 10--DANBURY -- In this city where the debate over illegal immigration sparks intense emotions on all sides of the issue, the e-mails sent by a Republican common council member targeting Hispanics, Muslims and Africans have hit a nerve.
The Rev. Ivan S. Pitts, president of the local NAACP chapter, said he was shocked when he saw copies of the e-mails, delivered anonymously to his New Hope Baptist Church about two weeks ago.
At a press conference in front of city hall Tuesday, Pitts said the e-mails sent by Pauline R. Basso, majority leader on the common council, are "offensive, hateful, racist, dehumanizing and promote unfounded fear" in ...
