Oct. 10--MANTECA -- In 1977, the population of Manteca was less than 20,000 and a lone fire station struggled to serve the city's needs; 1977 was also the year George Quaresma joined the department.
On Friday, 30 years after he first sped through the streets under a fire engine's siren, veteran Fire Chief Quaresma, 54, announced his retirement. His last day will be Dec. 28.
He has seen the Fire Department go from 15 firefighters and two engines to 36 firefighters, a fire prevention bureau, four division chiefs and 22 reserve firefighters, not to mention several teams of volunteers. He has also seen his hometown more than triple its population.
