Drought helps temperature soar: Tuesday's heat reached highs rarely seen for this time of year; it was the first 90-degree October day in 21 years.

Oct. 10--The temperature in Hampton Roads soared Tuesday to a record high not reached on any Oct. 9 since the Dust Bowl.

There have been hotter October days since then -- most recently, a 94-degree Oct. 4 in 1986. But the official National Weather Service reading of 91 degrees in Norfolk on Tuesday was hotter than any Oct. 9 since 1939, when it also reached 91.

Beyond the official recording site, Norfolk International Airport, it was even hotter. National Weather Service readings showed highs of 93 in Newport News and James City County. Farther west, Farmville scorched in 95-degree weather.
