Florida's high court reopens tax case: At issue is a way to pay for local redevelopment.

Oct. 10--TALLAHASSEE -- Lawyers clashed Tuesday before the Florida Supreme Court in a landmark case that may make or break millions of dollars worth of plans to improve blighted areas throughout South Florida, including efforts to redevelop a portion of Lauderdale Lakes, build 24 affordable town homes in Delray Beach and one day bury power lines and add sidewalks in Hallandale Beach.

At issue was whether Escambia County in the far western Panhandle should be allowed to use $136 million in tax-increment bonds to pay for a road-widening project near Pensacola without first getting approval from voters. The court last month said no.
