Critics give new I-35W bridge design good marks: They say plan strikes balance between form and function.

Oct. 10--It was the early 1990s, and St. Paul was having a fit over a radical in its midst.

New York artist James Carpenter had proposed a cable-stayed V-mast bridge to replace the Wabasha Street Bridge, a design that won national awards. Supporters said it would put St. Paul on the architectural map, much the way the new Guthrie Theater has done for Minneapolis.

But critics derided it as too expensive. Some even suggested it resembled Madonna's brassiere. In the end, the new bridge was modeled after a design by Florida-based Figg Engineering.
