Oh, the places you'll go: Fall is a popular time to hike because of the cool breezes and leaves bursting with color.

Oct. 10--Now that summer has come to a close and the weather should be cooling off soon, it is time to start thinking about getting outside to take a hike.

Here are a few local trails that vary in difficulty but offer a nice alternative to malls, movies and video games.

MCAFEE KNOB

The beginning of this popular scenic hike is located at the Appalachian Trail parking area on Virginia 311, just outside of Catawba.
