When asked to write this introductory section by the editors of Families, Systems, and Health, I was given broad latitude on the approach I would take to introduce the important topic of families who cope with chronic illness. There were a variety of tacks available to me, based on the various professional roles I assume: as a family/ psychosocial researcher, as a professor of family medicine, as a practicing family therapist who works with families experiencing chronic illness, or as an analyst who is familiar with this research area.
