GRAND FORKS, N.D.--Jun. 5--From workhorse to status symbol, the once- lowly pickup truck has driven a long road to center stage on showroom floors. Today, sprightly-colored pickups with luxury appointments grace both farmyards and country-club parking lots. They have come in several sizes and hybrids, from Subaru's Brat, a mini-pickup with two rear-facing seats in the bed, to four-doored biggies equipped to ride rails, to super-trucks that compete on mounded dirt tracks.
It's an evolution that's put pickup with a capital "P" on the ledgers of automakers competing in the U.S. market.
