HALF-WAY round Cancer Research UK's 10k run in the magnificent grounds of Hopetoun House, between rasping breaths, I remember dimly thinking: What on earth am I doing this for?
Just then another runner passed me; pinned to her back was the simple inscription: "For my Aunt Beth (who should have lived)."
Now it would be unbearably cheesy ? and also inaccurate ? to say that this poignant little message spurred me on, but it did certainly answered my question in spades.
It's all too easy to lose sight of why hundreds of ordinary men and women, of all shapes and sizes, take part in events like this.
