At first, Bernard Weisberger's intention seems straightforward, a collective biography of two generations of the La Follette family whose combined political careers cut a wide swath of U.S. history from the 1890s to World War II. "Fighting" Bob Sr. was Wisconsin governor and U.S. senator from 1901 until his death in 1925; Bob Jr. succeeded him in the Senate until 1946; Philip was a Depression-era governor.
