William Gibson's study is designed "to provide the undergraduate with an accessible examination of the principal themes and issues in the history of religion and society in the period" (ix). Drawing chiefly on Jonathon Clark and Linda Colley for his interpretive guidelines, Gibson summarizes much of the recent scholarship on the role of organized religion in Britain from 1760 to 1850. The heroes of his story are moderate reformers like Lord Liverpool and Bishop Blomfield. Gibson concludes that in this period religion was a constructive force in British society.
