A Derry mother who lost her son to suicide is urging the courts to hand out tougher sentences to drug dealers in a bid to "halve" the city's suicide rate.
Margaret McLaughlin, whose son Mark took his own life earlier this year, issued her plea yesterday as part of World Suicide Prevention Day.
"I can't speak for the whole community, and I don't claim to represent anyone, but, in my opinion, drug and alcohol abuse is a major factor in the suicide rate in this city. If you hand out longer sentences to drug dealers, it will, I believe, halve the number of suicides in Derry.
