Having motored out of the blocks and taken a commanding lead, Bedford were forced to cling for victory by their fingertips at Goldington Road this afternoon.
The Blues may have raced into a ten-point lead, but dogged Esher were always in sight of Bedford's score and Karl Dickson was clearly eager to kick the ball into touch at the death rather than look for a bonus point and risk defeat.
