The number of Federal Firearms Licenses has hit a 10-year low, dropping from 248,692 in 1993 to 198,848 in January, according to a recent report. This dramatic decline is expected to continue, according to Dick Welter of Basics Information Systems Inc., a Maryland-based company that is the sole public source of FFL data from the BATF.
"During 1993, the Licensed Firearms Dealers declined from 248,692 to 246,777, an insignificant decline of only 1,915," Welter said. "However, during 1994 the dealers declined by 43,036 to a new level of 203,741. The vast majority of this decline occurred since the first of June 1994. In January 1995, there were 198,848 dealers.
