Farmers here are facing a growing fodder crisis as unseasonably high rainfall has left most land unaccessible and prevented them from saving silage and hay for the coming winter season.
Not since 2002 have conditions been so poor for farmers, especially those in the Co Leitrim area, a region well known for its poor draining daub soil.
According to the latest report from Met Eireann, last month was one of the wettest on record. June is usually the driest month of the year but despite a few days of warm weather early in the month, more than twice the normal monthly rainfall was recorded, making it impossible for farmers to save hay and silage.
