ALL the hard work's over - now it's time to celebrate.

And there's plenty for pupils and staff at South Tyneside schools to be happy about as they notched up their best ever GCSE results.

In a first for the borough, six out of 10 pupils sitting the exams gained at least five A* to C passes.

The borough's average pass rate is now 60.78 per cent - an improvement of more than five per cent on last year.

Mike Dillon, head of social inclusion and achievement at South Tyneside Council, said: "Our progress over the past six years has been fantastic - from 42.2 per cent back in 2002 to a cracking 60.78 per cent.
