Located at the southwestern edge of Madison County, the town's story is a common one among rural America. Once lively and self-sufficient, the village's downturn paralleled the nation's economic shift from agricultural force to industrial giant.

But in the 1870s, DeRuyter was a hopping rail town with a variety of businesses and a hotel that was considered the best in Central New York.
