If you thought there was a lot of gas in the Barents Sea, home to the estimated 3.7 trillion cubic meters (130 trillion cubic feet) Shtokmanovskoye field, among others, wait until you see the Arctic Kara Sea just to the east. That's the message from state Gazprom's Vniigaz exploration and research subsidiary. It estimates that the Arctic Kara Sea, bordered by the Yamal Peninsula to the east and the island of Novaya Zemlya on the west, holds up to 15 Tcm (530 Tcf) of gas, the bulk of Russia's offshore reserves potential and almost double the potential in the Barents Sea (NC Sep.13,p1).
