The title of the movie tells the whole story: "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." In over two and half hours of deliberately paced - some would say snail's paced - action, the story is essentially just that. We see the last weeks of the outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt), and see how Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) wheedles his way into his gang and comes to be his killer.
