Judy Pelitere started as the president of mortgage lending at Gulf Coast Bank & Trust in May 2005, just a few months before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.

The New Orleans native has worked as an originator for over 25 years in the city she loves and has been through hurricanes before.

But this was different. The flooding devastated St. Bernard Parish where the community bank had its largest presence and four branches were destroyed.

With major parts of the city flooded, her loan officers were calling to see it they still had a job. She didn't know what to tell them. "I didn't know what would happen," Ms. Pelitere said.
