Forty-two years is a long time. For a career, it is a commitment. In fact, it can be argued that 42 years is a labor of love. In the case of Shirley Stanphill, that is exactly what it was.
Although her last official title at the University of Memphis' Sparks Bureau of Business and Economic Research was Business Officer III, she was more than that. She was the assistant to the director, office manager, financial secretary, copy editor, typist, and best friend. She truly did it all. As a testimony to her importance, before a final report or major proposal left the office, the phrase "run it by Shirley first" was always the directive.
