Containing previously published articles, Tang and Wiest's book offers only two original essays, each by the editors. Disclaiming any one perspective on the Church in China today, the editors have opted wisely for different perspectives which receive treatment in three sections. A historical part links some of the major issues which confront Chinese Catholics, such as religious freedom, the style of church leadership, the underground church, and theological-canonical questions.
