I am in London for a few days. Usually, my visits here are tied to a purpose - an official invitation, a chance to catch up with my younger son, a political occasion.
This time, however, I'm simply here because I marked out a few days in my diary some time ago, and have managed to keep them intact.
I had taken the train from Berwick, which was late in to King's Cross, and from there, a taxi.
I phoned the knight to tell him of my late arrival. "Ming's resigned," he said. And I pondered on how often my London trips have coincided with what is now called "breaking news".
It's more than 40 years since I saw the evening papers' placards ...
