WITH its gut-churning, ear-drum-smashing beat interspersed with distorted electronic burps and the occasional flash of melodic relief, it puts some in mind of power drills and medical computers. But for many young Germans, Techno is the dance music of choice. From subterranean lairs in east Berlin to an old airport in Munich, from hit-parade charts to the book-shelves and rails of trendy stores, Techno culture prevails.
It will reach its annual apogee in Berlin on July 8th with the "Love Parade", a Techno street-party. Tens of thousands of garishly dressed, whistle-blowing, dancing youngsters will "march" down the Kurfurstendamm, the city's main shopping boulevard, ...
