Those who receive the Yale Alumni Magazine would not have been surprised if the cover of the current issue had been a photograph of Lee Bass or of Western Civilization (if anybody at Yale could have been persuaded to pose for it). But on the cover was: Senator Joe McCarthy. In his right hand he held a pointer, and he was using it to identify on a huge map the strength of the Communist Party of the United States in various states. Any alumnus breathless to learn whether the Yale Alumni Magazine had suddenly decided that Joe McCarthy had earned the respectability that sometimes attaches to those who appear on the covers of magazines quickly found his answer inside.
