What makes vector drives "different." (Plant Engineering: Electrical)

A vector drive offers considerable advantages over conventional variable-voltage, variable frequency speed drives used in alternating current motors because of its ability to provide direct torque control and its high dynamic response capability. It is provided with an electronic control element and control loops which regulate the magnitude and direction of the magnetic flux of in the motor. The vector drive is suitable to operating conditions which require sudden changes in load, speed and position.
