TN Agri Varsity plans to develop GM papaya seed by 2011
New Delhi, Oct 23 (PTI) -- The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University today signed an agreement with global seed major Monsanto for developing a GM papaya seed, resistant to Ring Spot Virus (RSV).
"It would take at least four years to develop the transgenic papaya seed," Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) Director P Balasubramanian told reporters here after signing the agreement.
With the development of a transgenic variety of papaya resistant to the RSV, the crop losses on account of the disease, estimated at 30-70 per cent, would be minimised and productivity increased, he said.
