BOSTON - The Senate yesterday gave initial approval to a bill that would enlarge the protest buffer zone around reproductive health centers and keep anti-abortion demonstrators outside a 35-foot-wide arc from the centers' driveway and doorway entrances.
The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Harriette L. Chandler, D-Worcester, is an attempt to fix what she called an unenforceable and arbitrary floating buffer zone, adopted seven years ago, that allows demonstrators within 18 feet of the entrance and within 6 feet of staff and patients as they enter the clinics.
